White holes


What is a white hole in astrophysics?
A white hole is a theoretical idea that comes out of the same equations that describe black holes. If you already know something about black holes, you will remember they are regions of space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape, not even light. A white hole is the opposite: a place in the universe where, in theory, matter, light and energy can only come out, and nothing can go in.
Picture a constantly flowing fountain, except that instead of water it emits particles, light and matter from its centre. Sounds like magic, doesn't it? So far, though, no white hole has ever been observed in the universe. Some scientists think they might be highly unstable, or exist only for very short periods, such as at the end of a black hole's life.
White holes are also connected to the concept of Einstein-Rosen bridges, or wormholes. According to that idea, a black hole could be “connected” to a white hole somewhere else in the universe, or even in another dimension — though all of this is purely hypothetical.
How does a white hole relate to the story of The Loop?
In “The Loop”, the white hole is far more than a scientific curiosity. It is a key part of the mechanism that sustains the cycle of temporal resets. This white hole emits an enormous quantity of tachyon energy, which envelops the entire megastructure. Instead of collapsing the way a black hole would, the phenomenon acts as an “eternal fountain”, constantly releasing the particles that control time.
But here is the problem: the stability of the white hole is in danger. If it gets out of control, it could break the balance of the system, and time as the characters know it would collapse. That is why Óliver is so worried: the degradation of this phenomenon could destroy not only the megastructure, but the whole of the reality trapped inside the time loop.
In this context the white hole is not merely a cosmic object, but a metaphor for hope and for danger. It is a source of life that keeps humanity trapped, and it could also be the key to breaking free, if anyone works out how it really functions.
Tachyons
What are tachyons?
Tachyons are hypothetical particles that move faster than light. In real science these particles have never been observed, but they do appear in some physical theories.
According to Einstein's theory of relativity, nothing with mass can reach or exceed the speed of light, because it would need an infinite amount of energy. Tachyons, however, behave in a very curious way: from the moment they exist (if they existed), they would already be moving faster than light. In fact, they would always move faster than light. That brings some very strange ideas with it, such as the possibility of travelling backwards in time. A tachyon could, in other words, “see” the end of an event before it began.
Scientists proposed tachyons more as a mathematical curiosity than as something that could really exist. Although there are theories in which such particles could have effects on the universe, none has been demonstrated.
How do tachyons relate to the story of The Loop?
In “The Loop”, tachyons are fundamental to explaining how the phenomenon of temporal resets works. The megastructure around the white hole is wrapped in a tachyon field, a kind of quantum shield made of these particles. Because tachyons can move faster than light and possibly travel through time, they control and stabilise the temporal cycles.
In this story, tachyons are the key to how everything related to time works. The existence of a tachyon field around certain places or structures is the scientific explanation for how time can behave in strange ways. Because they move faster than light, tachyons interfere with the flow of time, allowing resets and other anomalies to occur.
These tachyon effects also shape how the world is perceived and how the characters experience reality, as though they were inside a temporal bubble where the normal rules of time do not apply. Fluctuations in these fields could cause distortions in time and create serious challenges for anyone trying to stabilise the phenomenon or escape it.
In the story, tachyons represent the duality of time, being both the tool that makes the resets possible and the obstacle to stopping them. If the flow of tachyons gets out of control, time would stop being cyclical and could crumble into a temporal catastrophe.

The Heat Death of the Universe: the science, and what it has to do with The Loop

What is the heat death of the universe?
Imagine the universe is an enormous party that began with a huge bang: the Big Bang. At first everything was very hot, full of energy, light and matter moving at great speed. Over time, that party quietened down. Stars began to go out, galaxies moved apart and everything cooled, little by little.
The heat death (also known as the Big Freeze) is the scenario in which the universe goes on expanding for ever. That means that, over billions of years, galaxies will be so far apart that light will no longer be able to travel between them. Stars will go out and there will be no new energy. The universe will become a dark, frozen, silent place, with not enough heat to sustain life or any kind of activity.
This happens because the universe, driven by a mysterious energy called dark energy, expands ever faster. In time, all matter will break down into basic particles such as electrons and neutrinos, drifting through an infinite, cold space. That stage is called thermal equilibrium, because everything will be at the same temperature, close to absolute zero (-273.15°C), where movement and energy cease to exist.
How does it relate to The Loop?
In The Loop, humanity is trapped in a temporal cycle, repeating the same day over and over. The loop, overseen by the artificial intelligence ZEUS, appears to be a way of preserving humanity. But preserving it from what?
This is where the idea of the heat death makes sense. The loop is a temporal cage that keeps humanity alive while the universe outside slowly goes out. By holding time in a constant cycle, ZEUS stops humanity from advancing towards an inevitable future in which the universe becomes a frozen, uninhabitable place.
When the characters discover that the universe outside the loop is an infinite darkness, they face the question:
Is it worth living trapped in the same day if the future offers nothing but a cold, silent ending?
The loop, in this case, is humanity's last refuge from a dying universe. Staying inside that cycle has a price, though: freedom and progress. The characters' inner struggle turns on deciding whether it is better to live for ever in a temporal prison or to risk facing the end of time in a universe condemned to heat death.
Why does this concept matter in the story?
Heat death raises philosophical questions about the meaning of existence when the ending is inevitable. In The Loop, that idea is explored through characters who ask themselves whether escaping the temporal cycle is worth it if the universe outside is empty and doomed.
So the astrophysical concept of heat death is not only scientific background to the novel, but also a metaphor for human fears: the fear of being forgotten, of the ending, and of infinite solitude.
In short:
• The universe is expanding ever faster because of dark energy.
• In time, the stars will go out, matter will break down and everything will be left cold and dark.
• In The Loop, the temporal cycle becomes an ark protecting humanity from that fate, but it raises the question:
What is the point of an infinite existence if it is empty of future?
And so science and fiction come together to explore the limits of time, of life, and of the inevitable end of the universe. 🌌✨
