The hole in Earth's magnetic field is real
The South Atlantic Anomaly, the weak spot in Earth's magnetic field, is spreading and already splitting in two. What that really means for satellites, radio and fiction.

There is a point on this planet where Earth's magnetic shield is so weakened that satellites passing over it suffer electronic failures. This is not a forum hypothesis: it has a name, coordinates and a constellation of European satellites watching it. And for twenty years it has been doing something nobody predicted: splitting in two.
22,000 nanoteslas: the figure that is actually documented
The South Atlantic Anomaly is a band of abnormally weak magnetic field stretching from South America to Africa. Between 1970 and 2020 its intensity fell from about 24,000 to about 22,000 nanoteslas. Over the same period the anomaly has been drifting westwards at roughly twenty kilometres a year. And in recent years a second centre of minimum intensity has appeared to the south-west of Africa: the patch is dividing.
Taken as a whole, Earth's magnetic field has lost around nine per cent of its intensity over the last two centuries. The European Space Agency's Swarm constellation exists precisely to measure this: to separate the different magnetic signals that make up the field and work out what is happening in the planet's core.
It is worth stating the other half, because that is where most of the people telling this story fall down. Geomagnetic reversals, magnetic north and south swapping places, have happened many times, at a frequency of the order of one every 250,000 years. Statistically, that means one is due. It does not mean one is happening now: the weakening being measured is still within the field's normal range of fluctuation. Both things are true at once, and it is the second that never makes the headline.
What collapses when the field weakens is not civilisation
The documented effect is specific and dull: where the shield is thinner, charged particles reach down into low orbit, and satellites crossing that zone accumulate technical failures. There are no earthquakes, no shifts in consciousness, no awakening. There is electronics that degrades.
And that is where this stops being a piece of popular science and starts to look like my job.
A police service runs on three things we take for granted until the day they fail: the radio, positioning and the time. The radio tells you where the rest of your people are. Positioning tells you where you are and where the thing you are documenting happened. And synchronised time is what turns a sequence of events into a demonstrable sequence: without a reliable timestamp, a record is not evidence, it is a memory.
All three depend on infrastructure that lives in space or synchronises with it. When one of the three degrades, the world does not end: convenience ends. You go back to the old procedure, slower, more manual, more dependent on somebody writing things down properly. Anyone who has worked with a radio that won't reach knows exactly what I mean, and knows the problem is not the silence: it is that you carry on acting as though the information were still arriving.
There is a case file that appears in no police station. I wrote it for readers who want to see how an investigation that has not happened yet gets documented from the inside: what goes on the record, what is left out, and who decides the second. It is sent by email, and only to those who ask for it.
Why conspiracy prefers ley lines to nanoteslas
There is a reason alternative mythology clings to ley lines, energy grids and planetary frequencies, and never to the South Atlantic Anomaly.
Nanoteslas are measured. They have a historical series, an instrument that records them and an agency that publishes the data. And the moment something is measured, it stops being able to explain everything: it becomes a figure that only explains its own subject. The ley line, by contrast, is never measured. That is the whole of its usefulness: because it cannot be checked, it works equally well for the megalith, for the sighting and for Saturday's headache.
What is striking about all this is that reality, this time, is stranger than the substitute. A planetary shield that is thinning, drifting west and splitting in two, driven by an engine three thousand kilometres beneath our feet that nobody has ever seen and that we know only by inference. Nobody needs to invent a mystical grid on top of that. It is already strange enough.
When I wrote Zero Frequency I was interested in exactly that border: the moment when a real pattern, measurable, published and boring, becomes indistinguishable from an invented one for anyone looking at it with the wrong expectation. Miguel Reyes doesn't run into a conspiracy because he finds something impossible. He runs into one because he finds something perfectly possible and cannot get anyone to look at it twice.
Interesting fiction starts where the signal stops
The temptation, writing this, is to turn the magnetic field into a switch: it goes off, and civilisation goes with it. That is comfortable and it is false, and it also wastes the only good thing the subject has going for it.
The good part isn't the blackout. It is the degradation. A world in which the signal doesn't disappear but becomes unreliable, and in which nobody adjusts their behaviour to that unreliability because we have spent thirty years being trained to believe whatever the screen says. That is where the novel is: not in the catastrophe, but in the chain of decisions taken on data that was no longer good and that nobody checked.
