What a time loop really is, and why fiction fakes it

What a time loop is in physics, the three ways of closing one without contradiction, and why almost no loop film manages to hold its own version to the end.

A time loop, in physics, is not Tuesday starting over. It is a curve in spacetime that returns to its own starting point, and we have known for seventy-seven years that Einstein equations allow it. What almost no film sustains is not the physics: it is the accounting of memory.

The physicist loop is not the film loop

In 1949 Kurt Gödel found an exact solution to the equations of general relativity describing a rotating universe containing closed timelike curves: paths along which an object always moves towards its own future and ends up in its own past. It is not a narrative trick or a licence; it is a legitimate solution of the theory.

Other families of solutions with the same property followed, and with them the serious question: if the theory allows it, why do we not see it? In 1992 Stephen Hawking put forward the chronology protection conjecture, the suspicion that the laws of physics conspire to prevent such curves forming on a macroscopic scale. A suspicion, not a theorem. It remains unproven.

The small print matters, because it is the honest part. The known solutions that produce closed timelike curves demand conditions nobody knows how to build: impossible rotations of the entire universe, or matter with properties that violate the energy conditions obeyed by everything we have ever measured. That a theory permits something on paper and that the thing can be assembled in a laboratory are two very different claims, and conflating them is the first cheat in almost all time-travel popularisation.

None of that is what happens in loop fiction. There the whole universe resets at a given hour and one consciousness, or several, keep the memory of previous iterations. That is not a closed timelike curve. It is something else, harder to justify, and it is worth saying so before going on.

There is a case file that appears in no police station. I wrote it for readers who want to see how an investigation that has not happened yet gets documented from the inside: what goes on the record, what is left out, and who decides the second. It is sent by email, and only to those who ask for it.

Three ways to close a loop without contradiction

The classic objection is the grandfather paradox: if you go back and prevent your own birth, who went back? There are only three coherent ways out, and every loop story picks one, whether it says so or not.

The first is self-consistency. The principle that bears Igor Novikov name holds that only those journeys that generate no contradiction are possible: if you travelled to the past, you were always there, and what you did was always part of what happened. No amount of free will beats the arithmetic. It is elegant and suffocating, which is why it works so well in tragedy.

The second is branching. Every intervention in the past opens a different history; you undo nothing, you found a new line. The paradox dissolves because the grandfather whose line you cut was never yours. The price is narrative: if every attempt creates a separate universe, nothing the protagonist does has consequences for what he cared about.

The third is the reset with memory: the universe returns to an earlier state except for one detail, the information held inside a head. This is the one used by almost every film that just came to mind. And it is by far the most expensive to justify.

The problem is not time: it is memory

If everything returns to the state of Monday at six in the morning, the protagonist atoms return to the state of Monday at six in the morning too. A memory is not a floating entity; it is a physical configuration of matter. Rewinding the world while leaving the memory intact requires that something, somewhere, stays outside the reset and holds that information.

That is where a loop story stakes its credibility, and that is where almost all of them go quiet. The moment you accept that there is a place where information survives the reset, you owe the expensive answers: where it is, who maintains it, how much capacity it has, what happens when it fills up and who can read it. A loop with no infrastructure is magic. A loop with infrastructure is science fiction, and it is also a thriller, because all infrastructure has an owner.

That is the test I set any loop story: not «is it possible?» but «who pays the bill for the memory?». Most of the films I love fail it. They are still great films. They are simply telling something else.

Writing a loop that survives the test

When I started writing about this I set myself a simple rule: the loop has to have a mechanism, and the mechanism has to be expensive. No free resets. If something preserves memory between iterations, that something exists, takes up space, consumes resources and was built by somebody who decided to build it.

That rule is what turns a fantasy premise into a techno-thriller: the moment the loop has an owner, the question stops being a matter of physics and becomes a police matter. The Loop starts from a world trapped in a twenty-four-hour cycle that everyone is aware of, which is the most demanding version of the problem: if the memory survives in millions of heads at once, the bill for the record is enormous, and somebody is paying it.

The interesting question was never whether you can go back. The equations have been saying that, under certain conditions, you can. The interesting question is who keeps the record of the previous attempts. Because whoever holds that record is in charge, and they are not going to show it to you.
